“Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov” Foreign Language School, in its 37 years of existence, has educated and trained generations of young people who have found their realization in the various spheres of science, as well as in the social and political life of Bulgaria. A number of graduates from the School are now part of the cultural and intellectual elite of Bulgaria. Students’ training and education in the School provides them with a solid basis and moral stability in their personal development and professional recognition. 

The School profile is foreign language learning. 875 students are annually trained in it by 60 highly qualified teachers. Established in 1971 as a German Language School, currently it trains students who master two foreign languages at an outstanding level. The students can choose from a variety of languages - German, English, French or Russian. Next year there will be one more option added – Spanish. History, Geography, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are also taught in foreign languages. 

Learning foreign languages is an advantage, an ideal opportunity for professional and personal realization and a prerequisite for career development in the globalizing contemporary world. This defines the School as a highly preferred educational centre and a leading training institution for the young people in the town and the region. 

The students are accepted in the school after they have graduated seventh grade and after they have successfully passed entrance tests. They undergo education and training from the eighth to the twelfth grade. 

Many of the students opt for the School because of the opportunity to be trained in specialized groups in German under the DSD II programme which has been functioning since 1994/1995 academic year. Up to date 351 students have attained German Language Diploma which provides them with the opportunity to continue their education in Germany or in other German speaking countries. This becomes possible thanks to the linguistic competences which they develop in the course of their study. 

For another large group of students English is the most preferable language. They receive solid preparation for the exams held in the English Language World, i.e. TOEFL, SAT and IELTS. Many of them are accepted to continue their education in prestigious European and American Universities. Their success and international recognition are a proof of the high quality of education provided at “Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov” Foreign Language School.  

The students who study French get the feel of French culture, learn about the history and people’s psychology of France. They get prepared for the DELF exam which opens the doors to the Higher Educational Institutions in France. The School has established and currently keeps good relations with the French Cultural Centre in Bulgaria; it works in partnerships and is involved in linguistic exchanges with French Schools. All this proves to be beneficial for raising the prestige of the school as the only French Language Learning centre for the young people in the region.

A direct result from the overall policy of the School, which has always aimed at successful realization of its students, is the one-hundred percent of acceptance of its graduates in the most prestigious Bulgarian universities. 

The School works on a number of projects financed by National and European Programmes. This presents an opportunity to take the training outside the classroom and to improve it by new methods, to visualize and enrich it. The students have the basic role in implementing these projects. They realize their ideas and potential with a lot of imagination and creativity.
